New Ban On Personal PlatesWednesday, February 25, 2004 - 11:50 AM
A federal judge in Sacramento permanently barred the state from issuing new vehicle license plates that promote the interest of private nonprofit organizations.
The ban was sought by an anti-abortion group after the Legislature refused to pass a law allowing a plate with the words "Choose Life." The California-based Women's Resource Network called the ruling a victory. A U.S. district judge says state law that lets the Legislature decide which groups are featured on the plates is unconstitutional. Under the judge's order the DMV is able to continue issuing Yosemite National Park license plates.
The plates raise about $1 million a year for the Yosemite Fund. The money goes to help park upkeep.
