Tahoe Board Rejects Fertilizer Ban

Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:40 AM
South Shore Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe land managers say education about the use of fertilizers -- rather than an outright ban -- is the best way to address the problem of environmental damage caused by phosphorus.

Scientists say phosphorus is a key nutrient that spurs the growth of algae and robs Lake Tahoe of its famed clarity. Environmental groups have lobbied for a regulation requiring only organic fertilizers be allowed at Lake Tahoe. But the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency says banning fertilizers with phosphorus would cause an uproar and have questionable benefits.

The TRPA governing board has decided to stick with its 2002 decision not to impose any ban on phosphorus fertilizers but instead encourage only limited and careful use of such products.
