Poll: Kerry Holds Comfortable Edge Over Bush

Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 07:20 AM

A statewide poll released today shows Senator John Kerry holds a double-digit edge over President Bush among likely voters in California.

The nonpartisan Field Poll found the Massachusetts Democrat would lose some ground in the state if independent Ralph Nader stays in the race but no enough to seriously threaten his margin over the president.

A telephone survey of registered votes found Kerry favored over Bush 55 percent to 40 percent with five percent undecided. Kerry's strongest support came from the Democratic strongholds of San Francisco and Los Angeles and Bush held a significant edge with voters in rural areas.

The poll also found that Bush's standing in the state was based on a desire to end his presidency rather than an endorsement of Kerry.

The poll was conducted in May and had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
