Standing-Room Only at Channing PerformanceWednesday, May 26, 2004 - 03:25 PM
Actress and singer Carol Channing joked and laughed with the crowd at a packed Sonora Opera Hall on Wednesday.
The afternoon began with an exhibition of dresses in the Victorian Fashion Show, presented by Pauline McCulloch and nearly two dozen models of all ages. Then Channing took to the stage.
Channing sang classic numbers, such as "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
But she also performed lesser-known songs, such as "We Want Carol", a song from Channing's vice-presidential campaign during her school years.
"When I'm vice-president, when I'm vice-president, we'll all leave school at twelve o'clock, when I'm vice-president," sang Channing and husband Harry Kullijian.
Channing even performed a Haitian corn grinding song.
She also took time to joke with the audience, and discuss her early days of school and becoming a performer.
The event went on Wednesday afternoon, at the Sonora Opera Hall.
