Bill To Ban Smoking In Cars With Kids ExtinguishedFriday, May 28, 2004 - 12:00 AM
California lawmakers have turned back a proposal to ban smoking in cars carrying young children.
The bill would have prohibited smoking if the children in the car were of an age and size to be in a child safety seat. That is, kids younger than six or who weigh less than 60 pounds.
Violations would have brought a 116-dollar fine.
Supporters said the bill was a logical extension of other laws designed to prevent childhood injuries and diseases.
But one opponent said studies showing secondhand smoke to be a serious health hazard were "made up to justify more government intrusion."
