Mother Lode Observes Memorial Day

Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 08:30 AM
Crosses and flag mark the graves of American war veterans at Carter's Cemetary in Tuolumne City.

Memorial Day activities abound in the Mother Lode region this weekend as veterans and citizens alike honor those who gave there all for our country.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47-48 of Tuolumne hold a memorial ceremony Sunday at 10 a.m. at Carters Cemetery. The service includes a 21-gun salute, flag folding ceremony and the playing of taps. There will be no parade this year.

Also Sunday the VFW Post 31-54 conducts ceremonies at Columbia Cemetary at 10. Then at noon the American Legion Post 58 conducts services at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Monday, Memorial Day ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. at the historic Columbia Cemetery in Columbia Historic State Park.

American Flags go up along Highway 120 in Big Oak Flat and Groveland as part of the south county's observance of Memorial Day. Other services at local cemetaries are planed Monday morning as well.
