Firefighters Contain, Control Nor-Cal FiresSaturday, June 26, 2004 - 10:55 PM
California firefighters have managed to control one blaze northeast of San Francisco, but winds are hampering efforts to contain a bigger fire along the eastern Sierra Nevada.
The first blaze was a fast-moving grass fire that destroyed a home, damaged eight others and forced some evacuations. It started on Friday afternoon.
It threatened a high school and a hospital before crews brought it under control.
Closer to the Nevada border, a 700-acre wildfire is threatening a Marine housing facility.
Several hundred fire crews built a containment line around part of the blaze, but wind gusts up to 40 miles-per-hour have made their battle tough.
Two smaller blazes were fully contained Saturday.
