Man Arrested, Charged with 7 FeloniesMonday, June 28, 2004 - 12:10 PM
A Calaveras County man was arrested and booked Friday on charges ranging from theft of a motor vehicle to assault on a sheriff's deputy.
20-year-old Daniel Paul Mortensen was already wanted on multiple warrants for felony evasion of officers and failing to appear in court. Last Friday, when Calaveras County Sheriff's deputy David Hooks approached Mortensen at the Kiva boat launch site in Copperopolis, the suspect provided a false name, and then became combative.
The deputy was able to partially handcuff the suspect, but Mortensen then got a hold of the deputy's baton, struck him in the hand, and fled on foot.
Suspect Mortensen was later found trying to saw off the handcuffs, and was taken into custody without further incident.
He now faces seven felony counts, two misdemeanor counts, and the original two felony warrants.
Mortensen is being held in lieu of 325-thousand dollars bail.
