Committee Approves of Sierra Nevada Conservancy

Legislation that would create a Sierra Nevada Conservancy to buy and protect land in the Sierra and Cascade ranges has been approved by a California Senate committee.

But the author describes the bill as a work-in-progress that could come back to the panel.

The Natural Resources Committee voted 6 to 3 today to approve the bill, which sends it to the Appropriations Committee and allows it to keep up with legislative deadlines.

But the author, Assemblyman John Laird of Santa Cruz, says he's still discussing amendments with the Schwarzenegger administration, and he promised to bring the bill back to the committee if there are substantial changes.

One likely change would be to add local representatives to the conservancy board. As Laird's bill is written now, the conservancy would be run by a 10-member board made up of state and federal government representatives.
