Independence Day Unique This Year For The FlagWednesday, June 30, 2004 - 10:10 AM
If you're unfurling the old flag for this coming Fourth of July holiday, there are some things you need to know this year. Independence Day is falling during a time of national mourning.
Mike Hale is vice president at Elmer's Flag and Banner. And the stars and stripes are at half-staff honoring former President Ronald Reagan's passing. And since he died on June fifth, the flags stay at half-staff for 30 days -- until July fifth. Hale notes something that many people may NOT be aware of. He says if people don't have their flag where they can lower it, then they need to put a black ribbon on the flag.
Hale says he called the White House to confirm that Grover Cleveland died June 24th, 1908 -- the last president who died during the Independence day season.
