Radonovich Urges More Trees Be Made Available For Logging

Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - 02:20 PM

"Stanislaus National Forest grows 300-million board feet each year."

19th Congressional District Representative George Radonovich is urging the Forest Service to free up more trees for harvesting in the Stanislaus National Forest.

Radonovich says he agrees with logging industry officials on thinning trees for fire protection, especially in areas where the forest is interfaced with residential communities.

Logging industry officials are stepping up pressure on the Forest Service and political representatives to allow more logging in the forest. Radonovich's comments come on the heels of a meeting between Sierra Pacific Industries workers and the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors. Mill workers say they're worried more layoffs will occur before logging picks up. The Standard Mill laid off 27 workers earlier this month and the mill in Chinese Camp has undergone layoffs and a scaling back of its operations during the past 3 years.
