BLM Holds Scoping Meeting

Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 10:05 AM
BLM Ranger Steve Martin has patrolled the Red Hills for 13 years.

Bureau of Land Management officials were in Sonora last night for a public scoping meeting.

The BLM's Folsom office manages public land from Marysville to Mariposa. Field Manager Deane Swickard says the purpose of the meeting was to educate the public on the BLM's planning process and to garner input on the agency's formulation of a new Resource Management Plan. Swickard says the plan hasn't been updated in nearly a quarter-century.

The Bureau of Land Management oversees approximately 80-thousand acres of public land in the Mother Lode in Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. The Red Hills near Chinese Camp is one of the most popular areas managed by BLM in the region. Ranger Steve Martin patrols the Red Hills and says public input on how best to manage the area is vital. Martin says managing multi use areas for the public is a true balancing act.

BLM officials held a similar scoping session with the public in San Andreas in Calaveras County last week. The new Resource Management Plan is not scheduled to be finalized until 2007.
