Shelley Legal Defense Fund EstablishedMonday, January 31, 2005 - 08:45 PM
Secretary of State Kevin Shelley is getting little help from his three-month-old legal defense fund. It's received a single $250 contribution.
The biggest contribution: a $100,000 loan from Shelley himself. Shelley aides say he's borrowed $500,000 against his home in San Francisco to help pay mounting legal bills. At least half the loan is already been spent on law firms and communications. Likewise, Shelley has raised only $28,000 in campaign cash since his legal troubles began last August.
Aides say Shelley is too busy defending himself and running his office to raise more money.
