Additional Details on CYA Fugitives

A statewide manhunt is underway for two fugitives from an Amador County firefighting camp operated by the California Youth Authority. Frank Flores, 21, of Tulare County and Julian Vasquez, 22, of Santa Clara County, are missing from the Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp southeast of Sacramento.

The unfenced camp houses 64 wards who perform public service work when they are not fighting wildfires.

A few walkaways from the camps each year aren't unusual. But the escapes take on more significance after two wards from a lockdown facility walked away from a Sacramento work crew in December. Authorities say one of them became involved in a violent multistate crime spree that ended with his capture last month in Minnesota.
