Canadian Beef Imports Focus of San Francisco Federal Appeals CourtWednesday, March 30, 2005 - 09:20 AM
A San Francisco-based federal appeals court is being asked to intervene in a trade dispute over a ban on Canadian beef imports.
The U-S Department of Agriculture and the National Meat Association is asking the Ninth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a federal judge's ruling in Montana that temporarily blocked a government plan to allow more beef imports from Canada. Canadian beef has been banned from the U-S for nearly two years after the country reported its first case of mad cow disease. With California ranking as the seventh largest beef producer in the U-S, some of the state's ranchers are worried that reopening the U-S northern border would lower cattle prices.
