Calaveras County Supervisors Beef Up Courthouse Security

Wednesday, April 27, 2005 - 10:00 AM

San Andreas, CA -- Recent violence in courtrooms across the country has prompted the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to beef up security at the county courthouse.

At its Monday meeting, the board decided to expand security screenings at the request of the courthouse staff. The courthouse contains two courtrooms, the Board chambers and the county probation department.

Previously, visitors to the courthouse were screened through two security stations Tuesday through Friday. Two separate stations were operated for the courtrooms on Mondays.

Following the board's decision, the main security stations will be open five days a week. Prior to the board's decision, court staff members said they didn't feel safe because visitors could get to the clerk's windows without being screened.
