Sacramento, CA -- A bill that offers incentives to contractors who hire Californians to work on state projects for goods and services has passed a committee vote.
Assembly Bill 1654 was approved by the Assembly Business and Education Committee by a vote of 6 - 3 Wednesday. The bill's sponsor, Hector De La Torre of South Gate, says the measure will recycle tax dollars to strengthen and fuel the state's economy.
The legislation would require state agencies to provide a 5% bid preference for private businesses with an employee base made up of at least 90% residents.
The bill has the support of the California Small Business Association, as well as numerous labor unions.
