Lockyer Changes Plans Now He Will Run For State TreasurerThursday, April 28, 2005 - 01:10 PM
San Francisco, CA -- Attorney General Bill Lockyer is dropping plans to run for California governor.
Instead, the 64-year-old Democrat says he'll run for state treasurer in 2006. He says he wants to avoid the character attacks and money chase that come with a gubernatorial bid.
GOP Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has not said whether he will seek reelection.
Lockyer also says he wants to spend more time with his family. He has raised about $11 million for his next campaign.
State Treasurer Phil Angelides is the only Democrat to formally announce plans to run for governor next year.
