Oakland, CA -- Hoping to plug a $51 million budget gap, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system has voted to increase fares, reduce discounts for seniors and disabled riders, and charge parking fees at many busy stations.
The fare increase will add a 10-cent surcharge on all tickets on top of a planned 3.7 percent increase. The minimum fare will go to $1.40 from $1.25. The changes, which will begin in January, were approved on a 7-2 vote by BART's board of directors on Thursday.
