Apology Bill Passes Assembly

Monday, May 30, 2005 - 03:05 PM

Sacramento, CA -- The State of California would be required to apologize to Mexican-American citizens deported between 1929 and 1944 under a bill approved by the state legislature last week.

The bill introduced by Senator Joe Dunn of Santa Ana passed the senate by a 27-5 vote and now goes before the Assembly.

The bill is based on a program instituted by the Hoover administration which sent about 2 million hispanics to Mexico in an effort to deport illegal immigrants and open up jobs.

However, Dunn contends most of those deported were either American citizens of legal residents. Dunn has also presented a measure that would create a fund to pay reparations to the deportees and their families.

That bill has passed a senate committee.
