Search Continues For Missing Hiker In Yosemite

Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 09:50 AM

Yosemite National Park -- Searchers are continuing to look for a lost hiker still missing in Yosemite National Park.

Incident Information Officer Karen Caldwell says there have been no new developments over the past few days in the search for 51-year-old Michael Ficery. She says authorities are scaling back the search and adopting a new strategy.

Caldwell says the rescuers have scoured an area of deep snow, heavy timber, steep slopes and swift waters ranging in elevation from 4000 to 9000 feet. She says searcher safety has been of prime concern during the week-long search.

About 10 searchers are on the ground in addition to dogs and an aerial survey. The search began where Ficery's backpack was found near Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.

Ficery is considered to be an experienced outdoorsman and hiker. He was reportedly camping alone when he went missing June 15th.
