San Andreas, CA -- Officials in Calaveras County are anticipating a 50% reduction in the county's projected budget deficit thanks to an influx of property tax from a boom in the building industry.
The Board of Supervisors approved a preliminary budget of $86 million for the next fiscal year. The spending plan initially included a deficit in the general fund of more than $440,000, but officials say with the additional revenue, that figure could be reduced to as low as $200,000. No layoffs of county employees are expected, but cost saving measures are in place. Many workers were forced to take five unpaid vacation days this year and a hiring freeze is in effect until January.
The panel has until September to present a balanced budget.
