Sonora, CA -- Bureau of Land Management firefighters are reporting an increase in unattended or abandoned campfires on public lands this year.
The Bureau says those fires are the leading cause of wildfires. Firefighters say the best technique for extinguishing a campfire is the Drown and Stir method, which involves pouring water on the fire, stirring the ashes, and pouring more water until it is out. The Bureau would also like to remind people that visitors to public lands are legally responsible for fire safety, and can be held liable for damages and the cost of suppressing any wildfires they cause. California Campfire permits are required in all undeveloped areas but not in developed campgrounds with cement fire pits.
