Juniper Uranium Mine Cost Analysis Available For Public Review

Sonora, CA -- The U.S. Forest Service is asking for public input on a recently released report evaluating the environmental impact and cost and liability analysis of a construction project at the Juniper Uranium Mine.

The project is designed to offer solutions to secure the mine site, and to implement effective remediation. A public information meeting is scheduled for August 12th at 6:30 at the Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor's Office in Sonora.

The Mine is located at 8,500 feet elevation on the Summit Ranger District of the Stanislaus National Forest, south of Sardine Meadow.

Uranium deposits occur naturally in the Sierra Nevada and piles of waste rock from the mine emit various intensities of gamma radiation.

The Forest service has determined that gamma emitting waste rock material is being released from the mine and has contaminated about a half mile of Red Rock Creek. The area has been closed, fenced off, and warning signs have been posted.
