Schwarzenegger Pushes Labor Law EnforcementSunday, July 31, 2005 - 08:45 AM
Sacramento, CA -- Governor Schwarzenegger has announced a new multiagency effort to enforce state labor and tax laws in an effort to, in his words, "shut down the underground economy."
Schwarzenegger announced the new initiative, dubbed the Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition, Friday during a tour of a jeans factory in Vernon that was caught last year underpaying some workers. The governor praised the factory for improving its compliance. He said the new unit will not focus on workers' immigration status, which Schwarzenegger called a "different issue."
Advocates for garment workers say the new effort is unlikely to make a difference because the state doesn't have enough money or resources devoted to enforcing current laws.
