San Andreas, CA -- Parents and faculty of the Calaveras Unified School District are against converting the district to a kindergarten through eighth-grade structure.
That was the consensus from community meetings and surveys conducted over the last few months. The current set up is kindergarten through sixth grade, then students move on to Toyon Middle School.
Noting a national trend towards the K-8 structure, the district decided to gauge the community's interest in the idea.
A survey shows overwhelming support for keeping the middle school set up. Few were in favor of the K-8 proposal and even fewer were undecided.
Concerns include having older and younger students on the same campus and whether the middle school curriculum would suffer by not offering as many subjects and electives.
Opponents also argue that Toyon Middle School serves as a good transition to high school.
