CHP Prepares For New Years Weekend Crackdown

Sonora, CA -- CHP says increased traffic enforcement over the holiday season has been paying off.

Tom Wills of the Jamestown office says drunk driving arrests are up over last year, not because more people are driving drunk, but because more are getting caught.

Wills says officers will be out in force this weekend for the heaviest enforcement period of the year.

Wills says CHP will not be staging DUI checkpoints but rather opting for roving patrols. He says the patrols are more effective than checkpoints because they allow officers to cover more of the area highways and back roads without being confined to one location.

Wills says every available officer will be out on the highways in order to cover as large an area as possible. He says the goal of this year's enforcement will be to lower the mileage death rate and get drunk drivers off the road.

Wills also stresses the importance of having a designated driver selected before the celebration begins.

CHP statistics show that there have been 28 traffic fatalities in Tuolumne County this year.
