Calaveras Government Center Hazards Could Prove Costly

Friday, February 24, 2006 - 10:20 AM

San Andreas, CA -- Mold and other hazards at Calaveras County's offices could cause leaders to dip into their coffers for clean up.

County Administrative Officer Tom Mitchell Monday will apprise the Board of Supervisors of several instances of mold, lead and asbestos throughout the county's buildings.

In particular asbestos was found in the ceiling of the county jail. Mitchell says it cannot be removed. Rather, it will be treated and sealed to prevent it from becoming airborne.

Also, a consultant found a pesticide storage building to be heavily contaminated. It will need to be completely dismantled.

There is no funding for the clean up. Mitchell will talk to the board about payment options including using contingencies that were set aside during last year's budget hearings.
