Tuolumne City, CA -- If it were the Olympic Games, Summerville High School would be sporting a bronze medal symbolic of a third place finish.
Summerville's Academic Decathlon team captured the statewide award in its own division in Los Angeles this month competing against teams from throughout the state. Nine-member teams competed in various catagories with this year's theme of The Renaissance. Team members initiated their studies for the competition last May. Subjects included math, language, economics, music and art. English teacher Wayne deGennaro coaches the Summerville team.
Summerville's 17 year old Evelyn DeFelice scored a gold medal in art, language and literature. She was also awarded a silver medal in the economics catagory.
Since 1980 Summerville has always earned no worse than a third place finish.
