A Change For California's Primary Elections?Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 04:00 AM
Sacramento, CA -- Two bills that could shake up presidential politics by giving California one of the earliest primaries in the nation, thus undercutting the Electoral College, were approved Tuesday by the Assembly elections committee.
The bills' author, committee chairman Tom Umberg, says the measures were designed to increase California's clout in determining who sits in the Oval Office. One of the bills would place California in competition with New Hampshire to have the earliest presidential primary elections in the nation.
The second bill would ratify an interstate compact under which California's 55 Electoral College members would agree to support the winner of the national popular vote for president.
