Firefighters' Pension Plan AlteredWednesday, April 26, 2006 - 11:00 AM
Sacramento, CA -- State personnel managers say they will close a loophole that allowed some state firefighters to retire with a monthly pension larger than the salaries they earned while employed.
The Department of Personnel Administration will begin giving managers the same pension benefits as rank-and-file firefighters. That will eliminate a dual pension system for supervisors that permitted them to accumulate more than the usual 90% salary cap. Tuesday's decision that supervisors can retire with full benefits at age 50 will be retroactive to the first of Januar when the pension sweetener began for rank-and-file employees under a contract negotiated five years ago.
