California Adopts Nation's Toughest Restrictions On Fish Farming

Friday, May 26, 2006 - 04:05 PM

Sacramento, CA -- Governor Schwarzenegger today signed into law what he's calling the nation's strongest restrictions on fish farming.

He says the regulations will help avoid problems that have plagued fish farms in other states and nations.

Problems include fish escaping from large ocean pens and breeding or spreading disease to wild populations, controlling fish waste, putting fish farms in inappropriate locations, and the killing of marine predators as operators defend their captive populations.

No fish farms are located now off California's coast, although shellfish are grown there commercially.

Fish farms will need a 10-year lease from the state Fish and Game Commission.
