Spotted Owl Remains Unprotected In CA

Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 09:00 AM

Sacramento, CA -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has denied a petition to list the California Spotted Owl as an Endangered Species.

This news comes at the end of a comprehensive study on the bird's population in the state.

The conclusion was that most owl populations in the Sierra Nevada are stable or increasing.

The study found that the primary threat to the species is catastrophic wildfire. It says that is why forest fuels reduction activities in the Sierra Nevada are important. Fuel reduction temporarily impacts the owl's population but has a long-term benefit in reducing the risk of wildfire.
