Water Rafting Popular Summer Activity In Mother Lode

Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 03:50 PM

Groveland, CA -- Tuolumne County is known for its whitewater and rightly so according to Sierra Mac River Trips owner Marty McDonnell.

With a 12 year old girl still missing after her canoe flipped over on the Tuolumne River Monday, McDonnell says rafters should use caution while on the water.

He advises people to raft in groups with at least one person who successfully completed the run when the water was at the same level. When it comes to high water, McDonnell says extra equipment and know-how is needed.

Due to the heavy snow pack, the water is extremely cold and McDonnell says wet suits and plenty of layers are necessary.

For water goers who don't want to rough it on their own, Sierra Mac River Trips offers guided trips that include all of the gear.
