FEMA Says No To Mariposa CountyFriday, July 28, 2006 - 06:00 AM
Mariposa County, CA -- Federal officials have denied disaster funding to Mariposa County for costs associated with an April rockslide that closed a main road leading into Yosemite National Park.
County officials say they'll appeal FEMA's decision. They're seeking reimbursement for sheriff's, fire and other costs spent in the closing of Highway 140. The county incurred about $1 million in damage and emergency response costs. Governor Schwarzenegger says the state will fund the rebuilding of the highway regardless of the federal government's decision. The state also is paying for the construction of two temporary bridges to bypass the rockslide site.
Caltrans say the first bypass bridge is set to open to limited one-way traffic Monday.
