Fresno, CA -- Authorities say at least 132 deaths are likely linked to a nearly two-week heat wave in California.
The vast majority of those deaths statewide have been elderly people whose bodies don't cope as well in the heat. The big jump from Thursday's total was caused primarily by reports from Los Angeles and Merced counties where coroners struggled to keep up.
Both Northern and Southern California have been gripped by triple-digit temperatures since July 16th. The Central Valley has borne the brunt of it with temperatures as high as 115.
The National Weather Service says the Mother Lode should get a break in the heat this weekend; however the cooler weather comes to late to save 83 year old Lillian Galusha of Jamestown, who was found dead Thursday morning in her home.
