Sonora, CA-- Roads in the Mother Lode may be getting better due to some money paid back by the state.
In the past few years the state has borrowed money from the Proposition 42 fund, which allows the sales tax of gasoline to go toward transportation projects. Public Works Director Peter Rei says when the proposition was on the ballot about five years ago, there was small print saying in times of financial hardship, the state could transfer money earmarked for roads into the general fund.
Rei says there is a way to make sure the money is spent on roads and roads alone. In the upcoming November ballot, there with be a new proposition known as 1A that would enable the state to withdraw funds only three times in a ten year period in the event of an emergency.
