San Andreas, CA -- "Slow down and live" are the words of San Andreas based C.H.P. Officer Mike Maddox.
AAA of Northern California predicts that 6.9 million Californians are on the roads this weekend. Maddox adds that all drivers should 1) drive defensively, 2) don't drink and drive, 3) obey the speed limit, 4) buckle up and 5) make sure child safety seats are properly installed. Last year 39 Californians were killed over the Christmas weekend in traffic related accidents. Including the Christmas and New Year's Weekend, 2,350 were arrested for driving-under-the-influence.
A first time D.U.I. offense can cost a motorist as much as $10,000 in fines and court costs.
80 percent of all C.H.P. officers are on patrol this weekend during another Maximum Enforcement Period.
