Courthouse Re-Opened Following Bomb Scare

Law enforcement investigates a mysterious box found in the bush pictured on the north side of the Tuolumne County Courthouse

Sonora, Ca -- The main courthouse building in downtown Sonora was evacuated this morning because a “mysterious box” was located near a bush on the north side of the building.

State, county and city law enforcement agencies were called in to investigate, as was the Calaveras County Sheriff Department's Special Operations Bomb Squad.

Officers later found it to be a false alarm.

“We had a county employee notify us that he thought it was his box that he had left unattended,” says Sonora Police Lt. Mark Stinson. “It was a piece of equipment that he was using to work on the building earlier today.”

Shortly before noon, the county worker arrived on scene and claimed the box. Stinson says the box in question was a “Marine battery case.”

The courthouse has now been re-opened.
