Berryhill Speaks Out Against Proposed Closure Of State Parks

Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 04:35 PM
25th District Assemblyman Tom Berryhill

Jamestown, Ca -- 25th District Assemblyman Tom Berryhill (R) is voicing opposition to Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed closure of 48 state parks, including Railtown 1897, to help make up for a $14.5 billion budget deficit.

“I for one will not stand by while Sacramento bureaucrats attempt to close our parks - even as they continue to pay for clean needles for drug addicts and condoms for prison inmates,” said Berryhill in a statement.

He continues by adding, “We know that this is not a serious idea. Governor Schwarzenegger was recently quoted as saying he only introduced the proposal to ‘rattle the cage' at the Capitol and he challenged lawmakers to develop alternative solutions.”

Rather than cut the funding to the state parks, Berryhill would like to see creative options explored. One idea he suggests is to cut off the $6 million headed to the UC Labor Center. He says money goes to train union activists and provides slanted studies.

Another option Berryhill has suggested is to look into private-public partnerships with non-profit organizations and charitable foundations.
