Health Advisory Due To Smoke And Heat

Tuesday, July 08, 2008 - 03:30 PM

San Andreas, Ca -- With temperatures sitting in the triple digits this week in areas of the Mother Lode, health officials are asking residents to take steps to avoid heat illness and smoke exposure.

According to Calaveras County Public Health Officer Dr. Dean Kelaita, children up to four years of age, the elderly and people with chronic health problems are most at risk of heat illness during prolonged periods of high temperatures.

“Young children and the elderly are very susceptible to heat as their body's ability to cool itself is more limited,” says Kelaita. “Persons with heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and those taking medications that interfere with the body's ability to cool down, are also at increased risk of heat illness.”

Kelaita says residents should limit time outdoors, keep windows and doors closed with the air-conditioner running and to limit physical activity and exertion.

The combination of extensive heat and poor air quality from wildfire smoke can increase the risk of heat illness or smoke related health effects.
