Area Drivers Hurt In San Andreas Crash

Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:00 AM

Calaveras County firefighters and emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to free several motorists trapped in their vehicles yesterday after a serious accident on Highway 49 near the Calaveras County Airport.

The CHP says 21 year-old Nicole Schock of San Andreas was headed north on Highway 49 and allowed her '98 Chrysler Sebring to drift off the roadway edge. When she overcorrected, the car went into the on-coming lane of traffic colliding with an Izuzu Trooper driven by 37 year-old Leanne Smith of Vallecito.

Two air ambulances were called in to transport Smith and her 32 year-old passenger Barbara Dinsmore of Mtn. Ranch to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. A third passenger in the Trooper, 57 year-old Paula Madsen of San Andreas was taken to Mark Twain, St. Josephs hospital. Schock suffered minor injuries in the crash first reported just after 1 p.m..

The roadway -- about 3.5-miles south of San Andreas -- was completely blocked, and traffic backed up in the area between Angels Camp and San Andreas.
