Governor Takes Plan To Nation's Capital

Friday, January 30, 2004 - 08:40 AM

Governor Schwarzenegger and backers of his $15 billion bond plan took their campaign to Washington this week.

Republican congressmen met yesterday to marshal support for the plan and Schwarzenegger called Senator Dianne Feinstein, California's most popular Democrat, to ask for help.

State Controller Steve Westly also is preparing a letter to Democrats in Congress asking for their support. The efforts come as the bond plan lags with voters even though Schwarzenegger has held rallies around the state to promote it.

Schwarzenegger argues that the borrowing plan, Proposition 57, is crucial to help him close the state's budget deficit without gutting services and raising taxes. A companion measure, Proposition 58, would bar future borrowing and require a balanced budget.
