Election Pressure In San FranciscoSaturday, January 24, 2004 - 01:10 PM
The "San Francisco Chronicle" is reporting that the nonprofit group accused of coercing workers to vote and campaign for Mayor Gavin Newsom also pressured its workers to work for Mayor Willie Brown.
Last week, nine workers of the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners, or SLUG, told the newspaper that they were pulled off the streets to campaign for Newsom. Now three former employees of group told the Chronicle that they were ordered to walk precincts, attend rallies and work a phone bank promoting Brown's candidacy in 1999. Brown refused to comment on the report. A spokesman for Mayor Newsom office said previously it had no knowledge of the alleged activities.
