offer plenty of opportunity
for skiing enthusiasts. Average snowfall for wintertime in Calaveras
and Tuolumne county ski resorts is around 400 to 450 inches for the

With are a wide variety of climate types available in the region,
and an ample assortment of activities, from backpacking to bicycling.
The Mother Lode area is a superb place to get out and experience
the Great Outdoors.
This area has a wealth of parks and forests for day hikes or for
bike riding. Plenty of riding stables for a day’s ride--
or an overnighter-- are found throughout the region. During those
hot summer months, a gold panning adventure is a great way to cool
off-- and the fun of discovering gold in your pan appeals to just
about anyone! Also in the area are some of California’s largest
cavern systems. Professional tours of these natural wonders are
fun and educational for the entire family.
There are many large lakes, and many rivers including some that
have class 4 and class 5 whitewater rafting. The Tuolumne River
is well known as California’s premiere wilderness whitewater.
For relaxing by the beach or breathtaking, adrenaline-pumping adventure,
the Mother Lode is your destination of choice.
Fishing in the many lakes and reservoirs of the Mother Lode can
be an exciting challenge, as can be a hike into the more remote
areas, where you’ll find remarkable fly-fishing in the high
country streams, rivers and lakes. You can go it alone, or hire
some guides to show you where the big ones are hiding out.
With our beautiful year-round weather and temperate climate, the
Mother Lode is a perfect place for golf. There are many courses
in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties, including some championship
courses.
There are many caves in the Mother Lode, due to the composition
of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Many of the local caves are run
commercially and have regularly scheduled tours, most with easy
enough access that the entire family can enjoy an afternoon of
cave exploring.
