I found a great article for the Real Estate section of myMotherLode.com by Dirk Zeller. It speaks to Real Estate agents but applies to my own job and life as well.

It is called: Setting Priorities

"Procrastination is the direct result of a lack of urgency to do what needs to be done and to do it now."

Yes, urgency is what I am trying to convey to my seven-year-old when he is doing anything and everything but his homework!

"Urgency is directly linked to success. You can increase your output by 30% if you work with urgency in mind."

That makes sense but as we all know many times everything is urgent- and the level above that- so how do we narrow the list down? Urgent also equals stress to me, and a lot of stress is certainly not healthy.

My grandma forwarded me the story about filling a vase with the big/important things first and then the smaller things so that everything filters down into the spaces and fits in one vase/successful life.

The article, here, outlines how to categorize your 'Things To Do' list. I suspect as people get older and are at a job longer they see the patterns more quickly.

Success I have found is not in getting everything done today, but in keeping up with it. Having things on my list for months was frustrating but it finally led to one hugely productive week where I got myself and the kids to dental appointments, resolved a credit issue, acquired a fridge from the classifieds, had a parent-teacher conference, and a 'Mom's night Out' at my house. I even gathered the information to send off a digital camera for warranty work!

There are still things on the 'To do list' but I have confidence that they will get done, in order, with more urgency than procrastination, and far less stress, I hope you have the same experience.
