Prison Officials Want To Build New Medical Facilities For Inmates
Sacramento, CA -- The California Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections is proposing to expand medical and mental health treatment for inmates.
The plan was filed on Friday in response to a recent court order mandating that the state better manage its overcrowded prisons.
It includes the construction of a 1,734 bed facility in Stockton at a cost of $1 billion. Funding would come from a $7.8 billion fund that was set aside by the legislature two years ago to address prison overcrowding.
In addition, three former juvenile detention facilities would be transformed into treatment centers for adults. Hundreds of treatment beds will also be added to additional facilities.
