23 Teacher Positions Eliminated

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — A budget shortfall of approximately $2 million is the reason at least 23 teachers will lose their jobs next year in the Calaveras Unified School District.

By a 4-0 Tuesday evening vote (Hank Nagle was absent) that was the decision of the Board of Trustees.

From Superintendent Mark Campbell, “What the Board decided to do with athletics is to table that discussion. There was significant parental presence there indicating there might be other options for fundraising to support those programs and so we’re going to meet with the various committees and if the parents, staff and community can come up with other funding options to completely cover the budget for freshman and/or elementary sports then we will continue to provide those programs.”

Campbell added, “It was an incredibly painful night because of the quality of teachers that we are losing. I know first hand what they do in the classrooms for kids. Seven of the teachers that we stand to lose graduated from Calaveras High School. It makes it even more painful and heartbreaking to see them go.”

Layoff notices were also given to two Calaveras High School vice-principals but that number may be reduced upon further study.
