Murphys, CA — 150 years ago this summer, the Murphys Historic Hotel became a mainstay of the thriving gold rush town of Murphys.
It was the summer of 1856 and the wonders of the Sierra were just being discovered. James Sperry and John Perry opened the hotel, which has had seven owners since.
The hotel is a registered State Historic Landmark and is noted for some of its famous guests, such as President Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain and Susan B. Anthony.
The hotel will celebrate its birthday this Sunday with a barbecue, a live shoot out and other entertainment.
