Sonora, CA — The Highway 108 Fire Safe Council will host a meeting Thursday, September 7 at 6pm at the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department Station 74 at Bigler and Jackson Streets in Columbia.
The open-to-the-public meeting is designed for homeowners in the Big Hill Rd., Yankee Hill Rd., Columbia, Gold Springs, Sawmill Flat and Springfield Ranch areas.
Firefighting agency officials will present an update on the new California Public Resources Code 4291 requirements to ensure a 100-foot defensible space around homes and structures. Also under discussion will be local community projects designed to reduce flammable fuels in the area.
These mountain communities and the general area surrounding them consist of private land located in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), with portions bordering Forest Service land. The area is considered a priority concern due to the level of flammable vegetation, adjacent homes and the threat to life, property and other values at risk due to the high potential for large and damaging wildfires.
